International Conference: Changing Conditions and Changing Approaches of Academic Work

4-6 June 2012.

Place: Seminaris Hotel in Berlin-Dahlem (Berlin, Germany).

Organized by: International Centre for Higher Education Research of the University of Kassel (INCHER-Kassel) with financial support by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Results of recent comparative studies on the changing situation of the academic profession as well as recent research undertaken in Germany in this thematic area will be presented at the International Conference in Berlin from 4th to 6th June 2012. A better understanding of values, views and activities of this core profession of higher education is anticipated to contribute to a fruitful dialogue among scholars, politicians and practitioners about the future of higher education as well as the role of academic profession in the future.  The conference will benefit from the following input:

  • First, an international group of scholars will provide an overview on the major findings of “The Changing Academic Professions (CAP)”, the largest survey ever undertaken on the perceived working situation, the views and activities of academics, thereby taking into consideration major contextual changes, such as increasing expectations of relevant academic work, internationalisation and growing managerial power.
  • Second, for the first time, results will be publicly presented of a similar survey of “The Academic Profession in Europe” (EUROAC). Both studies together provide an overview on altogether 12 European countries.
  • Third, the results will be presented of a dozen of analyses on changes of teaching at German higher education institutions. Corresponding projects had been supported by the BMBF in the framework of a research promotion programme on Professionalization of Teaching in Higher Education.
  • Fourth, the conference is timely for reporting the results of a major survey undertaken by INCHER-Kassel that shows how the German academic profession assesses the changes of teaching and learning in higher education experienced in the first decade of the 21st century on a global, European and national scale.
  • Fifth, various scholars from different parts of the world will report how “Higher Education Professionals” (student counsellors, international officers, quality managers, etc.) have become a more important component of university life in recent years and how this affects the role of academics.

Key higher education experts are invited, too, to comment these results and to discuss possible futures of the academic profession. The conference will take place at the Seminaris Hotel in Berlin-Dahlem (close to the Free University of Berlin) and envisages about 200 participants.

There will also be an invitation on 5th June in the evening on the part of INCHER-Kassel to celebrate Ulrich Teichler’s 70th birthday at a location still to be determined.

Further information on registration, accommodation opportunities, etc., will be available soon. Those being interested are invited to contact
