Career Guidance in Chilean Higher Education Institutions

Abstract

In the times of knowledge economy and society, the complex employment dynamics and the competitive higher education markets, the transition process from higher education to employment and professional career is requiring special attention. The intended correspondence between the preparatory and the applied dimensions of the graduate’s experience locates the transition process as a strategic stage adding pressure to higher education. In this scenario, the institutions are extending their provision beyond the academic sphere through organizational responses by introducing support services.
This paper explores the organisational steps that Chilean higher education providers are taking towards facilitating the transition process from higher education to employment. It is a descriptive analysis of the characteristics, evolution and strategic directions of the support services that aim to deal with the relationships between higher education and the world of work.
